The farm of Dalland is located in Mosfellsbær , only about 15 km from Reykjavík the capital of Iceland. Gunnar B. Dungal and his wife Þórdís Alda Sigurðardóttir have been breeding horses there since 1977. They started on a small scale, with one or two foals per year, while today (2008) about ten to twelve foals are born each year. The first mares they bought for breeding were Lýsa from Efri- Rot Eyjafjöllum, in South Iceland, and Vaka from Dýrfinnustaðir in Skagafjörður, North Iceland. Many of the Dalland brood mares are descended from these first two mares. Then they bought the mares Gróska, from Sveinn Guðmundsson of Sauðárkrókur, Skagafjörður and Von from Kristinn Guðnason Skarð, Rangárvallasýsla as foals, and later Rjóð from Syðra- Skörðugil, Skagafjörður and Katarína from Kirkjubær, Rangárvallasýsla . Other mares whose descendants have contributed to the breeding are: Hátíð from Dalland, a daughter of Sýsla ( Sýsla was born in Dalland and owned by Dalland´s first owners: Pétur Þorsteinsson and Björg Ríkharðsdóttir). and Hugmynd (she has 1. prize for ability ) that was a present from Björn Runólfsson from Hofsstaðir in Skagafjörður.

Kórund and Harpa from Dalland , Snörp from Varmalækur ( sold to Denmark) and Snót from Sunnuhvoll in Skagafjörður ( sold to Denmark ) were also used for breeding for a short time and have some quality descendants , like the excellent tölter Nátthrafn, son of Snörp, which is Halldór´s competition horse today. Kórund, mother of Leó, which Helle has been competing on and Hrefna, daughter of Harpa, which has been shown and competed on with good results by new owners.

When this is written ( January 2008) the second and third generations descended from these mares are of breeding age, but those who no longer exist and were used in the breeding are:

Lýsa, Vaka, Gróska, Dagrún, Stór- Stjarna, Lukka , Kórund, Harpa.

Until this day (Jan. 2008) 16 first prizes mares have been born, brought up and trained in Dalland / Dalur.

Two further 1. prize mares where bought as foals or youngsters; Von from Skarð and Katarina from Kirkjubær. Two mares from the Dalur breeding got first prizes at breeding shows abroad in 2007; Eldborg in Austria and Gullborg in Sweden. And Dúkkulísa from Dalland was awarded an honorary prize at the Icelandic National Horse Show (Landsmót) in 2006.

Emphasis has always been placed upon using outstanding stallions, chosen specifically for each mare with respect to gait talents, build and character.

Dalland and the adjacent estate of Búrfellsland, which also belongs to the farm, comprise a total area of 400 hectares, where extensive afforestation has been carried out in recent years. Tens of thousands of trees of various species have been planted, both for shelter and for their aesthetic value.

The estate includes varied land, from hillsides and tussocky marshland to grassy pastures surrounded by trees, which provide good shelter for the horses. The farm is ideal both for young horses which need freedom and exercise, and for horses in training, which are easily accessible in paddocks near the stables.

Untamed horses and the brood mares, are kept near the stables in the wintertime, so it is easy to keep an eye on the stud. In bad weather there are shelters so that all the animals can stay under roof if they want.

The farm’s policy is to apply the following procedure: breeding, raising, training, after which a decision is made on the future of the animal.
